What is Total Knee Replacement Surgery(minimal invasive)?

DR. CHETAN WANKHEDE is Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Total Knee Replacement Surgeon in Thane and Mumbai.

Knee replacement surgery is a procedure that involves replacing a damaged knee joint with an artificial implant.

During the operation metallic implant helps to alleviate pain and good good range of motion across the joint.

The main reason for knee replacement surgery is because of osteoarthritis of the knee, which damages the joint.

Procedure:-

Knee replacement surgery takes around one hour and involves removing the damaged cartilage and bone from the joint and replacing them with artificial metallic implants. These implants can be placed in different parts of the knee: the lower end of the femur (metal cobalt-chronium or Titanium piece), the upper end of the tibia ( metal cobalt-chronium / titanium piece), or at the back of the kneecap (made of strong plastic).

Advantages of Minimal Invasive technique:-

Also known as subvastus approach. There is no muscle cut and hence faster recovery, less blood loss and minimal pain.

Post-operative care:-

After knee replacement surgery, you must strictly follow the advice of the surgeon and the physiotherapy exercises for a complete and successful recovery. These exercises will increase in intensity as the mobility of the joint increases. The objective is to regain and increase muscle strength, correct any instability or deformity, relieve any pain you may have, eliminate any scar adhesions and improve your physical function.
